Number 3, Ad with appeal to fear

Number three from the exercise page on 195 wanted me to find an advertisement that used an appeal to fear. So I have chosen this billboard called "buzzed driving is drunk driving." In this picture, it depicts a car that has hit a telephone pole. You can clearly tell that this car is very banged up. But ironically, the car from the person that was supposedly only buzzed was banged up in the same way. The main idea that this billboard gives is do not drink or drive period. It does not matter how much you have drank. This billboard depicts appeal to fear because it gives the view a sense of urgency to understand the importance of not to drink and drive. The mental image of the car being smashed up no matter whether your drunk or just buzzed. I know this ad works from a personal standpoint because since I have seen this ad, I personally have not ever attempted to drink and drive.

  1. I really like your example for appeal to fear. It shows how the company is trying to show how drunk driving is the same as buzzed driving well by showing the same thing can happen even with just a few drinks. I think it's effective though, because it clearly states buzzed driving is drunk driving. It makes the reader understand why they are showing the same picture of the car into the phone pole. I like observing and analyzing appeal to fear now because after reading this chapter in the book, I feel like I see more and more examples everywhere. Thanks for a great example!

  2. I absolutely hate it when people use the I’m not drunk, I’m just a little buzzed excuse. This is an excellent example of an appeal to fear. Most people believe that because they did not that much to drink that it is okay for them to drive. I know some people that argue that there’s no way they will blow a 0.08 on the breathalyzer. Even if a person blows below a 0.08, that same person can fail a sobriety test and still get arrested. So even if you are just buzzed, it is possible that you are not in the condition to operate a vehicle. Great Example!.

  3. First of all, i want to say that this was a very good post by you. I believe that the example that you used was absolutely great. I agree with rufio in the fact that i hate when people say that they are just buzzed like buzzed doesnt mean drunk. Buzzed is drunk so that commercial is not lying when they say that buzzed driving is drunk driving. That is absolutely one hundred percent true. That might be the best example you could have used for this and i think you did a great job using the example to explain your point. Great job.

  4. This is a really good example of appeal to fear. I have seen this billboard before and I know it definitely scared me too. I feel like this is a really important appeal to fear. Buzzed and drunk driving does not make any difference a drink is a drink no matter what and no one should drink or drive. I would have to agree with you and also say from a personal standpoint that it definitely put more fear in me about the whole situation and makes me never want to drink and drive. Appeal to fear seemed to me like a bad thing at first but after reading your post I can definitely think of plenty of good appeals to fear for serious matters. Good post!
